You can’t receive Social Security disability benefits based on drug addiction even if your dependence on drugs makes it impossible for you to work. So if drug addiction is your only impairment, you don’t qualify for disability benefits. And in fact, if you are addicted to and taking drugs, it can prevent you from getting disability benefits for other impairments as well. (Though if you have stopped taking drugs and the SSA believes that you are in recovery, you should be able to get disability benefits.) Yes, but it’s not simple. Because addiction is a chronic disease, people can’t simply stop using drugs for a few days and be cured. Most patients need long-term or repeated care to stop using completely and recover their lives. Addiction treatment must help the person do the following:stop using drugs, stay drug-free, be productive in the family, at work, and in society. Why Drug Addiction Is Considered a Disease? Addiction is defined as a disease by most medical associations, including the American Medical Association and the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Like diabetes, cancer and heart disease, addiction is caused by a combination of behavioral, environmental and biological factors. Genetic risks factors account for about half of the likelihood that an individual will develop addiction. Addiction involves changes in the functioning of the brain and body. These changes may be brought on by risky substance use or may pre-exist. The consequences of untreated addiction often include other physical and mental health disorders that require medical attention. If left untreated over time, addiction becomes more severe, disabling and life threatening. Why Drug Addiction Cannot Be Prevented? Sometimes craving cannot be avoided, and it is necessary to find a way to cope: Get involved in a distracting activity. Read, see friends, go to a movie, immerse yourself in a hobby, hike, or exercise. Once you’re interested in something else, you’ll find the urges go away. Talk it through. Talk to friends or family members about craving when it occurs. Talking can be very helpful in pinpointing the source of the craving. Also, talking about craving often helps to discharge and relieve the feeling and will help restore honesty in your relationship. Craving is nothing to feel bad about. Challenge and change your thoughts. When experiencing a craving, many people have a tendency to remember only the positive effects of the drug and forget the negative consequences. Therefore, you may find it helpful to remind yourself that you really won’t feel better if you use and that you stand to lose a lot. Sometimes it is helpful to have these consequences listed on a small card that you keep with you. Urge surf. Many people try to cope with their urges by toughing it out. But some cravings are too strong to ignore. When this happens, it can be useful to stay with the urge until it passes. This technique is called urge surfing. Imagine yourself as a surfer who will ride the wave of your drug craving, staying on top of it until it crests, breaks, and turns into less powerful, foamy surf. When you ride out the craving, without trying to bat

Can Drug Addiction Cause Epilepsy? Whether to drink alcohol or take recreational drugs is a personal choice, but it is worth knowing the possible effects they could have on your epilepsy. Alcohol or recreational drugs can cause epilepsy in some people. Recreational drugs can trigger seizures or increase the frequency of seizures for some people, and can also interact with medication. Taking recreational drugs increases the risk of seizures and of mental and physical health problems, which in turn make seizures more likely. Learning more about your own epilepsy and treatment means you can make informed choices about your lifestyle. Can Drug Addiction Cause Bipolar Disorder? The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defines bipolar disorder in two categories. These categories are bipolar I and bipolar II disorder. People with bipolar I disorder experience one or more manic/mixed episodes followed by a major depressive episode. Those with bipolar II disorder have one or more major depressive episodes followed by a hypomanic episode. Bipolar I disorder is more severe than bipolar II disorder. It’s common for people with bipolar disorder to self-medicate with drugs and alcohol. These substances seem to ease the symptoms of manic and depressive episodes at first, which partially explains why many people with bipolar disorder have an addiction. Frequent drug use causes physical changes in the brain. The most obvious change is to the brain reward system, which makes using drugs feel pleasurable. However, changes in the brain reward system lead to compulsive, drug-seeking behavior. Drugs can rewire other parts of the brain that affect mood and behavior. Drug abuse and addiction can cause changes in the brain that lead to bipolar disorder. Even people who were mentally healthy before their addiction can develop bipolar disorder. Can Drug Addiction Be Passed Down? Substance use disorder often runs in families. That’s because there is an inherited component, meaning it can pass from parent to child by way of genes. For this reason, your family history offers clues about how vulnerable to addiction you might be. For example, if you have a close relative that’s affected, it’s a clue to be extra careful. Researchers use family histories too. They compare DNA sequences of family members to identify genes involved in addiction. First, they divide the family into two groups: affected and unaffected. Next, the researchers look for segments of chromosomes that are more common in affected people compared to unaffected. They narrow the segments down to specific genes to study further. Because people have complex and varied lives, in-depth studies are often done using animals in a controlled lab setting. When Does Drug Addiction Start? While humans are the most intelligent species, we are also the most hedonistic, or pleasure-seeking. We pursue and enjoy the things that make us feel good like tasty food and drinks, fun activities, comfortable environments and much more. When someone consumes drugs, the brain does not function as it would normally, and it begins to release more dopamine than it usually would. The reabsorption of dopamine is blocked by the way the drugs alter the brain’s chemistry, causing a prolonged sensation of happiness or euphoria, longer than a person would experience if they were not using drugs. Now, being the hedonistic humans we are, the brain will begin to ask for more and more of that good feeling, every time requiring just a little bit more than before, thus increasing the dosage of the drug needed to feel that wonderful effect once again, but also building tolerance. Soon, simple things that are not related to the drug don’t seem to make them happy, only the drug does. Things that someone used to enjoy now seem dull and pointless, and anything that has to do with consuming the drug that releases that good feeling becomes a priority. While this is a very oversimplified explanation of how one slips into an addiction cycle, it shows how much of the brain chemistry is affected by drugs, and how dopamine and the reward center are slowly mutated with every use. Can Drug Addiction Cause Ms? The etiology of multiple sclerosis (MS) remains unknown despite considerable research involving a number of disciplines for many decades. Cluster analysis was used to disentangle the possible heterogeneity of MS, based on clinical characteristics of 108 subjects. Further on, a case-control study was conducted within each subgroup found with the cluster analysis, to test with more validity environmental risk factors, such as alcohol, tobacco, medication and drug abuse. The controls with a rheumatoid arthritis condition were matched to the cases on age, gender and same post diagnostic period and were recruited from the same hospital. Three main groups of MS subjects were obtained from the cluster analysis, distinguished by the gender, the presence or not of family history and the degree of severity of their physical disability. The results showed that drug abuse was the only risk factor with a statistically significant odds ratio for overall and for the unique female group without familial history of MS. There is plenty of evidence for a connection between genetic endowment and addiction to alcohol and drugs. By analyzing patterns of inheritance, researchers have learned that heredity accounts for about half of the risk that a person will develop an addiction. Addiction is a medical illness and develops in the same way as many other illnesses. A person with some underlying genetic vulnerability is exposed to an environment that brings on the illness. In the case of drug and alcohol addiction, common environmental factors are stress and, of course, the availability of the addictive substances.
